Medscape has launched a free AI medical scribe for US physicians, the latest entry in a developing space of artificial intelligence tools to help with clinical tasks. Known as Medscape Scribe, the new tool — available to all US doctors when logged in to their Medscape account — transcribes conversations during patient visits and generates a synopsis of the encounter.
Clinicians can select from three commonly used summarization templates, depending on their preference or the type of visit:
- SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan)
- H&P (History & Physical)
- POMR (Problem-Oriented Medical Record)
The tool can be used in the Medscape app to record consultations and on medscape.com to edit the reports and integrate them into the electronic health record.
Scribe is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Transcripts and summaries are removed after 72 hours.
About a half dozen tools to help doctors perform similar tasks have been developed by other companies.
Got medical questions?
Scribe joins another AI tool recently rolled out by Medscape: Medscape AI Search, a free service designed to enhance efficiency and accuracy in retrieving medical information. Launched in April, the AI search tool delivers immediate answers to medical queries through an intuitive chat interface on the Medscape app.
For example, doctors can ask about:
All responses have one thing in common: answers are based on information from Medscape reviews by experts.
Unlike traditional search queries, Medscape AI Search can understand complex questions and provide concise answers before linking to relevant Medscape reference pages. Medscape AI Search also provides pertinent news articles and follow-up prompts to help clinicians get the information they need.
